It’s stunning to see how quickly and completely our society has caved to the radical propaganda and outright lies of the sexual identity activists. Christians barraged with relativistic philosophies have been made to feel unloving and mean-spirited for speaking truth, and are now “tossed back and forth by every wind of doctrine” on this subject.
Within the Christian community, there are truly unloving hate-mongers on one extreme (much rarer than activist voices would like us to think) and feel-good “don’t judge me and I won’t judge you” ecumenicals on the other. Most Christians fall somewhere in the middle, but are increasingly swayed by arguments for “tolerance” and “equal rights.”
Truth in gender
Let’s save the morality, tolerance, and equal rights debate for another time and just start with getting on the same page factually. The fact that should be inarguable is this: The male and female of the sexes are not determined by choice, but by biology. Just as 2 + 2 = 4 and can’t be changed, males are born males and will always remain males at the cellular level. Females are born female and will always remain that way, no matter what surgeries or hormone treatments one receives. These are unchanging facts, no matter how much someone might wish they weren’t true. We can’t just wish biological facts out of existence.
All the talk about “gender identity” is another way of trying to wish these facts away. If a man “feels” he is a woman, then the LGBT community wants us to believe that he is. How otherwise rational people can be fooled into accepting this is beyond comprehension. What if he “identifies” as a child of Steve Jobs? Should the courts honor that in probate hearings? You can bet Jobs’ estate would demand DNA tests to prove the claim, because it is scientifically verifiable. So is sex, folks.
The activists–arguably those on both extremes of the debate–have confused the issue by throwing in discussions of sexual preference, hormones, body parts, constitutional rights, morality, etc. We can discuss all that later, but not until we can agree on what constitutes male and female, factually speaking.
It’s bizarre to me that I haven’t heard one political or Christian commentator, whether progressive, conservative, or libertarian, address the fact that male and female are biological distinctions with scientifically verifiable characteristics. We’re chromosomally different, people. Beyond hormone production, body shape, muscle mass, etc., males have an X and a Y chromosome, and females have two X chromosomes. We can debate all day long about whether sexual orientation or preference is a choice, and I’m happy to have that debate at some point–but it’s meaningless unless we can first agree that our sex itself is no more a choice than our species. If someone were to “come out” and “identify” as a horse, we might suggest counseling, and rightly so.
It’s time we say out loud what we already know instinctively: A male can’t choose to be a female any more than a dog can choose to be a cat. The two are scientifically, verifiably, biologically, unalterably, different beings. My heart truly go out to the people whose life experiences have left them sexually confused, and who may have bought into the lies and even undergone irreversible surgeries or hormone treatments as a result. The causes of this gender confusion can be debated all day long, but that’s not the point of this article. I only want to establish the plain fact that gender is not a choice.
How activists, politicians, lawyers and judges can make the case with a straight face that a male can change his sex to become female or vice versa is unfathomable to me. Just as 2 + 2 will always equal 4, a male will always be a male, whether he wants to be or not, and regardless of his sexual orientation or preference. Who he is attracted to has no bearing on his gender. To allow him to call himself a female on his driver’s license or any other official documentation is a bold-faced lie. I’m all for equality. He may legally dress how he wants and be attracted to whomever he wants, but that doesn’t make him a female. He therefore shouldn’t be allowed to lie about his sex on forms. News media should not change the gender from “he” to “she” for news reports, because that is factually incorrect.
Perpetuating lies is not compassionate
How we compassionately share God’s love with people who are sexually confused is another question altogether. I’m convinced that we can’t do that by perpetrating the cruel lies they’ve been told that gender is a product of who they feel they are, or who they are attracted to. We can only begin by speaking the truth in love. The first century church existed in a culture that was not unlike ours, including all kinds of sexual deviations from nature and from Judeo-Christian morals. Paul told the Corinthian church that “such were some of you,” so these issues have been under discussion for two millenia at least. The good news is that the Good News of Jesus Christ has the power to change hearts, minds, and behaviors. The God who created male and female certainly has the power to straighten out any sexual confusion or misplaced attraction one might have if one seeks a relationship with Him.
I’m not sure how we can have a meaningful conversation as a society about this subject until we are allowed to speak the truth in love about what makes a person male or female without being called hate mongers. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m no such thing. I’m confident that God’s heart is broken that so many people have become so sexually confused that they truly feel like they are the opposite of how they were created. We don’t do them any favors by perpetuating the lie that sex can be changed by an operation, or by hormone treatments, or just by choosing to “identify” oneself as a different sex. Sex is a biological, unchangeable fact. I’m just being honest, here, that’s all. In our culture, honesty is in short supply.
